The Benefits of Taking Private Lessons:
Accountability: While a student may be able to discreetly “hide” in a classroom setting, no such chance exists in a private lesson—either you practiced or you didn’t! Private lessons instill accountability, personal discipline, and build a strong work ethic.
One-on-one attention: Due to the size of most band classes, a classroom setting offers limited individual attention for students. In contrast, a private teacher can note areas of struggle and provide specific assistance.
Pursue individual interests: In a classroom setting, a teacher must stick to a specific curriculum. Repertoire cannot be selected based on every student’s personal preference. In private lessons, a student has a greater opportunity to pursue his or her own musical tastes.
Instruction based on learning styles: Every student has as unique learning style. A classroom setting cannot offer individually tailored instruction to every student. A private teacher can teach to a student’s unique learning style in a way that makes sense to the student.
Pace of instruction: A naturally gifted student may become bored in class waiting for others to catch up. Another student may feel the class is moving too fast, which can lead to frustration. Private teachers move at a pace that works best for the individual student.
