Curricular Ensembles
6th Grade Beginning Band
Beginning Band is a year-long course designed to offer students an opportunity to learn to read and appreciate music through playing a band instrument. Beginning Band provides a foundation for continuing musical growth and therefore, the director will be responsible for setting the guidelines for balanced instrumentation. The students will be divided into like-instrument groups. Emphasis is on learning basic instrumental skills and music theory, and developing a practice regimen. Students will also learn proper instrument maintenance. Students will provide their own instruments and supplies. At the director’s discretion, certain school-owned instruments may be provided. There will be performances scheduled outside of the school day, and attendance at all performances is required as a part of the student’s grade.
7th Grade Intermediate Band
Intermediate Band is a year-long course that meets every day. The course is open to students with one or more years of playing experience or by recommendation of the director. Intermediate Band provides a foundation for continuing musical growth and therefore, the director will be responsible for setting the guidelines for balanced instrumentation. Students continue to study correct instrumental techniques, fundamentals of music theory as well as ensemble and performance skills. Several extracurricular performances and rehearsals are required. Attendance at all rehearsals and performances are required as a part of the students’ grade.
8th Grade Concert Band
Concert Band is a year-long course open to students with two or more years of playing experience or by recommendation of the director. Concert Band provides a foundation for continuing musical growth and therefore, the director will be responsible for setting the guidelines for balanced instrumentation. Students continue to study correct instrumental techniques, fundamentals of music theory, and ensemble and performance skills. Several extra-curricular performances are required. Attendance at all performances are required as a part of the students’ grade.
Extracurricular Ensembles
Jazz Band
Jazz Band is open to all 7th and 8th grade instrumentalists. Students must be enrolled in Intermediate Band or Concert Band, with the exception of piano, bass, and guitar, or at the discretion of the band director. Jazz Band focuses on performing a variety of styles including jazz, Latin, and rock. Rehearsals are once a week after school, and extra-curricular performances are required. There are no auditions - all are welcome!
